When Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

Our dentists at O’Brien and Ellison DDS prefer to always use restorative dentistry to repair and save natural teeth. Unfortunately, since this is not always possible, we must resort to extraction, which is likely to be recommended if:
- Severe decay is affecting your tooth and spreading, posing a risk to your other healthy teeth
- Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) is now attacking the jawbone, causing it to weaken and make natural teeth loose
- Facial trauma has resulted in a broken tooth that cannot be successfully treated with a root canal and/or dental crown
- Your child’s permanent tooth needs to erupt, but it cannot because the primary tooth will not fall out
- Orthodontic treatment is required to create appropriate spacing throughout the mouth, but overcrowding is a current issue
