What Happens During a Root Canal?

There are several steps your dentist must take to perform a root canal and ensure it is successful. They include:

  • Administering local anesthesia to numb the tooth and the surrounding area. Nitrous oxide can also be provided if necessary.
  • Isolating the tooth with a dental dam.
  • Entering the tooth through an opening created in the crown.
  • Sterilizing the interior of the tooth to make sure no bacteria remain.
  • Filling the previous space occupied by the pulp with gutta-percha.
  • Placing a dental filling over the small opening in the crown to protect against bacteria affecting the tooth again.
  • Placing a custom-crafted dental crown over the affected tooth will strengthen it and make it functional over time.
